Why Do Mosquitoes Seem to Bite You More Than Others?

The Truth About Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes are a pesky part of summer, especially if you seem to always attract more than your fair share. While there's no surefire way to avoid mosquito bites, understanding why they target certain people more than others can help you take steps to minimize your risk.

According to the American Mosquito Control Association, there are several factors that can make you more attractive to mosquitoes, including:

  • Body odor. Mosquitoes are attracted to the lactic acid in sweat, so people who sweat more are more likely to be bitten.
  • Carbon dioxide. Mosquitoes use carbon dioxide to locate their prey, so people who exhale more carbon dioxide are more likely to be bitten.
  • Body heat. Mosquitoes are also attracted to body heat, so people who are warm to the touch are more likely to be bitten.
  • Blood type. Some studies have shown that people with certain blood types, such as type O, are more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes.
  • Clothing color. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, so wearing light-colored clothing can help reduce your risk of being bitten.

If you're one of the unlucky people who seems to always attract mosquitoes, there are several things you can do to minimize your risk of being bitten, including:

  • Use insect repellent. Insect repellent is one of the most effective ways to prevent mosquito bites. Look for a repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, or IR3535.
  • Cover up. When you're outdoors, wear long sleeves and pants to cover your skin. You can also tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks to create a barrier against mosquitoes.
  • Avoid mosquito-prone areas. Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, so it's best to avoid being outdoors during these times. You should also avoid areas with standing water, as this is where mosquitoes breed.
  • Eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. You can help reduce the number of mosquitoes in your area by eliminating mosquito breeding grounds. This includes emptying any standing water around your home, such as in birdbaths, flower pots, and gutters.

By following these tips, you can help reduce your risk of being bitten by mosquitoes and enjoy the outdoors without getting eaten alive.
