The essentials
The Tour de Lombardie is a one-day professional cycling race held in Italy and Switzerland every autumn. Since 1905, there have been 114 editions of the Tour of Lombardy, first held in 1905. This is the eleventh of 37 men's elite races that make up the UCI World Tour cycling calendar The race was known as the Giro di Lombardia until 2012; from 2012 to 2019 it was known as the Il Lombardia, before reverting to the Giro di Lombardia name in 2020.
History and route
The Tour of Lombardy is one of cycling's five Monuments, the others being Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris–Roubaix, and Liège–Bastogne–Liège. The Tour of Lombardy is often referred to as the "Race of the Falling Leaves" because it is held in the autumn, when the leaves on the trees are changing color. In 2021, the race started in Como and finished in Bergamo, with a length of 239 km (149 mi). The route is hilly, with several climbs, including the Madonna del Ghisallo, the Muro di Sormano, and the Colle del Gallo. The field is often reduced after the earlier climbs, with smaller teams of riders at the front of the race.
2023 race
The 2023 edition of the Tour of Lombardy will be held on October 8th. The start and finish locations have not yet been announced. However, many of the world's top riders are expected to compete, including defending champion Tadej Pogačar, two-time winner Vincenzo Nibali, and former world champion Julian Alaphilippe. The race is expected to be a close and exciting one and is an event that cycling fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting.
